Substrate culture is one of the most widely spread methods in soilless culture. It is the root system of crops fixed in organic or inorganic matrix, through drip irrigation or trickle irrigation method, to supply crop nutrient solution. The cultivation substrate can be packed in plastic bags, or spread in the cultivation trench or groove. Substrate culture nutrient solution is not circulating, known as open circuit system, this can prevent disease transmission through the circulation of nutrient solution.

Substrate cultivation has strong buffer capacity, there is no contradiction between water, nutrients and O2 supply, and the equipment is simpler than hydroponics and aeroponics, and even does not need power, so it has less investment and low cost, and is widely used in production. Matrix cultivation is one of the most realistic ways from the current situation of our country.

The difference between soilless cultivation and conventional cultivation is that plants are grown directly with nutrient solution instead of soil. In order to fix plants and increase air content, most of them use gravel, sand, peat, vermiculite, perlite, rockwool, sawdust and so on as the fixed matrix. Its advantages can effectively control the optimal requirements of temperature, water, light, nutrients and air during the growth and development of flowers. Because soilless cultivation of flowers without soil, can expand the planting scope, accelerate the growth of flowers, improve the quality of flowers, save fertilizer and water, save manual operation, save labor and cost. The disadvantage is that the one-time investment is large, need to add equipment, if the nutrient source is polluted, easy to spread, nutrient solution preparation needs technical knowledge.
